The Freedom Over Texas 4th of July Celebration will go on as scheduled. Admission is free with the donation of one canned foot item per person. The canned goods will benefit the Houston Food Bank. This year's musical lineup includes Jack Ingram, Chris Young and Rodney Atkins. The evening will culminate with a fireworks show off of Buffalo Bayou.
Please be assured that safety is the number one priority. The City works with the fire marshal and various entities to make sure every precaution possible is taken. For instance, the staging area is completely hosed down with water and we do no proceed if winds are too high. Given the current drought, we do not want residents having their own fireworks displays at home. This City's official observance is a safe alternative. We would not proceed otherwise.
Sixth Ward Neighborhood
There have been a number of growing concerns regarding streets of the Sixth Ward Neighborhood. The Houston Police and Fire Departments have both said that the current plan is very safe. They have stepped up and will have additional traffic enforcement and signage for the event around the neighborhood streets. HPD will have rovers in the area for traffic enforcement the day of the event. HFD has thoroughly evaluated the safety aspects of the site, adding fire apparatus, personnel and other safety measures. Our number one priority is safety throughout the site, including all surrounding neighborhoods.
We hope everyone has a very safe Independence Day celebration and hope you can join us Monday as we celebrate our nation's independence.
